Welcome to Year 1

The teachers in Year One this Year are Mrs McTeggart, Mrs Colwell, Miss Shefford and Mrs Redding.

Our teaching assistants are Mrs Willmer, Mrs Wilson, Mr Hill, Mrs Shortt, Miss Bazeley and Mrs Brown.

In the morning there is always a member of staff to greet the children on the door and if you have any queries then that member of staff will endeavour to address the concern so that they it be dealt with promptly. If you require a more lengthy discussion then please make an appointment with your teacher via your class e-mail or by contacting the school office.

Each term the theme of learning changes and you will receive a topic talk booklet to help you support your child’s learning at home.

Reading is the key to success in Year 1!!! Read! Read! Read! The children will be part of a comprehensive phonics scheme that will support and help them to embrace the phonics screening check at the end of year 1 with confidence. Reading at home is essential to enhance and consolidate the learning in school. Books are changed twice weekly and as an incentive the children are entered in to a book draw when they have read each week. This enables them to win a book of their choice to enjoy and keep at home as a reward for star reading!

Weekly spelling lists are sent home and tested on a Friday. You will also receive a termly list with some suggestions for ideas to help at home. These words are part of the Year One learning programme and these sessions help the children to apply them independently during writing tasks.

Every learning experience is carefully planned to be inspirational, exciting and fun!

Watch your child learn the skills to become an Explorer, Scientist, Artist, Designer, Mathematician, Historian, Author, Technology expert, Sports professional or whatever their life choices may be.

Australia is Awesome!

Year 1 have had a fabulous time this term learning all about Australia.

One of our highlights has been Australia Day! We made digeridoos and boomerangs and created some of our own aboriginal artwork. We constructed The Great Barrier Reef and a model of the rainforest and created interesting fact files! We also made pictures of The Sydney Opera House and made some fairy bread with special sprinkles!

Another memorable day was our Beach Day! Lots and laughter and fun was had building sandcastles, dipping our toes in the water and playing games outside. As a special treat we ended the day with a film ‘Back to the Outback’ and an ice-pole!

Finally we displayed all of our wonderful work in an exhibition for the parents and rest of the school to enjoy! Great effort everyone :-)

Whipsnade Zoo Trip Day!

On Wednesday Year 1 spent the day at Whipsnade Zoo! We were very glad for the beautiful sunny weather and were very excited and chatty for the whole coach journey there. When we arrived at 9.45 some of us were already asking about lunch! We had some time walking around the zoo seeing many wonderful and interesting animals. We listened to some keepers sharing facts and asked lots of great questions. We made sure to make plenty of stops for snacks, drinks and more importantly LUNCH! We found a lovely spot on the grass in the sunshine to enjoy a picnic together before setting off around the zoo once more.

We were amazed seeing tropical butterflies flutter past our faces, giraffes towering over us and even some cheeky lemurs jumping over our heads! A fantastic day was had by all and it was certainly a day that we won't forget in a hurry. Although the day was brilliant it was also exhausting and some of us didn't quite make it to our beds but instead had a little nap on the way home!
